Abstract:
The aims of the project were to map and locate features of archaeological significance so as to aid the design of a proposed development on the site and enable the local planning authority to arrive at an informed decision relating to archaeological matters which may have been affected by the development. A documentary assessment indicated that the site had not contained buildings from the early 19th century to the present time. Field names implied that this may also have been the case in the 18th century. The presence of earthworks along the west side of the site suggested that structures were likely to have existed here in the medieval period as they lay along the line of a road which led to a medieval motte and bailey castle. An earthwork survey showed that the above-ground remains formed well defined and regular features, also indicative of buried structures, and the results of the survey were useful in helping to interpret a subsequent geophysical survey. The results from the geophysical survey (magnetometer and resistivity) provided an accurate location plan of anomalies beneath the earthworks which lay along the west road frontage, as well as locating features of interest across other parts of the site. These included the locations of possible structures and the identification of other features such as a possible trackway leading from the main street into the site. [Au(abr)]
