Abstract: |
During the watching brief and rescue excavation of a late Bronze Age pit complex, a total of 17 large pits were identified, many of which were waterlogged with preserved wooden lining in the form of stakes or wickerwork. Four of the pits exhibited wooden oak plank steps towards their bases whilst another had a 'platform' of several two metre long staves on its base. A complete large inverted jar was also found on the base of one pit. The jar was found to have organic traces of 'basket work' on its exterior surface. The interior of the pot was sealed with beeswax to make it watertight which suggested use as a bucket. A further find of a probable oak yoke was also recovered and was exceptionally rare. Late Bronze Age pottery and axe cut marks from the site indicated a date of c.900-600 BC.[Au(abr)] |
