Abstract: |
A survey of an area of Hensbarrow Downs proposed for china-clay spoil heaps was undertaken. The proposal area was located adjacent to the sites of a number of Bronze Age barrows and a possible prehistoric pasture boundary, and the survey identified that the predominant character of Hensbarrow Downs over the last 6000 years would have been an area of open rough ground used by local farmers for seasonal grazing. Two periods of intensive tin mining were also identified within the proposal area, dating to the later medieval period and the early post-medieval period and a small china-clay working had been operational in the 1840's.
