Abstract: |
A feature constructed of red bricks, flint and sandstone was uncovered by workmen in the rear of no. 9 South Street, during the excavation of a trial pit in connection with renovations. The larger part of the feature had originally had a vaulted ceiling. It appeared not to have had a floor, as its walls rested upon a layer of silty clay with small flints. A small excavation into this yielded one sherd of Samian ware. It was considered that the feature made little sense as a cellar, and that it could be better interpreted as a cess pit of generous capacity. The present building on the site was of early 19th century date, and thus pre-dated mains drainage in Chichester. The cess pit could have belonged with this building, or with an earlier building. If the latter were the case, it could have influenced the siting of the rear wall of no. 9 in its original 19th century form. [Au(adp)] |
