Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained over the excavation of a pipeline between the Hawkstor disused clay pit and the Colliford/De Lank pipeline as part of a drought order. The watching brief was recommended in view of the close relationship of the proposed pipeline to the Brockabarrow Bronze Age settlement. No recognisable archaeological features were observed and only one find, a medieval iron ox shoe was recovered. Although the lack of features or artefacts relating to the Bronze Age settlement was disappointing, the resulting negative record was instrumental in two ways; primarily, it suggested that the new pipeline did not destroy any important archaeological remains. Secondly, the evidence encountered at the site pointed towards a fairly stable system of land management over the past 3,000 years. [AIP] |
