Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for an extension to a church, built in 1723 and restored in 1900. The church may have lain on the site of an earlier ecclesiastical structure. An abbey had lain in the vicinity, its only visible remnant being the Abbey Gate, a Grade I Listed Building and Scheduled Ancient Monument which lay 50m from the site. During the watching brief, post-medieval and modern material was recovered, which included window glass and leading, clay pipe stems, animal bone and two fragments of stone moulding. A ceramic drain pipe was also observed. [AIP] |
