Abstract: |
A two-stage archaeological investigation was carried out on land destined for brickearth extraction. The site lay a short distance south of the main London to Canterbury Roman road. Roman and medieval remains had been found a short distance to the west. Important Mesolithic and Palaeolithic remains had also been found within brickearth deposits a short distance to the west of Bapchild. The first stage of archaeological fieldwork was a strip and map investigation of the site. At this stage only the topsoil was removed to expose the brickearth. A small circular hearth/fire-pit of undetermined date and three separate animal burials of probable recent date were encountered during this stage of the works. The second stage of the archaeological works was an intermittent watching brief of the extraction of the brickearth. No evidence of archaeological features, deposits or artefacts was observed during this investigation. [Au(abr)] |
