Abstract: |
During the watching brief several details, mostly relating to the construction of the western tower, were observed and recorded. Primarily, it was discovered that the tower was constructed on top of a foundation, which was formed from two separate elements. The primary foundation consisted of large un-mortared chalk blocks. Secondly, a sub-foundation of four layers of mortared flints was constructed on top of the chalk blocks. Lastly two buttresses were added to the western ends of the north and south walls of the nave, clearly to aid in the support of the tower. The foundations of both buttresses were found to abut the sub-foundations of the tower, providing clear evidence that they were constructed after the building of the tower. [Au(adp)] |
