Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed house extension and as part of Scheduled Monument Consent. One trench was excavated and revealed an undated ditch at least 6.5m in width. The location and orientation of the ditch matched the putative line of the defensive circuit of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Salmonsbury Camp and the size of the ditch further suggested it formed part of this circuit. A single undated posthole was also revealed. The evaluation had identified archaeological remains likely to have formed part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Salmonsbury Camp within the proposed development area, surviving to a depth of 0.4m below the modern ground surface.
