Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks necessitated by the installation of telecommunications equipment within the Scheduled area of an Iron Age hillfort and Neolithic enclosure. The works took place within a fenced compound 50m north-west of the east entrance of the hillfort, which contained a wooden radio mast, originally a Second World War radar mast, and its associated buildings. The works comprised the excavation of a service trench and the lowering of the ground level within the main building. No archaeological features or deposits were revealed, and the only finds recovered were a few sherds of modern pottery and small fragments of slate within the service trench, none of which were retained. It was concluded that archaeologcial deposits were unlikely to have survived beneath the buildings, but that the potential for survival away from the buildings was high. The topsoil depth and lack of disturbance noted within the service trench compared favourably with the situation noted during excavations elsewhere within The Trundle. The fact that no features were noted in the trench may have represented evidence for a relatively low concentration of Iron Age settlement within the hillfort. [AIP]
