Abstract: |
Machining of an area to the west of Wessex Lane and just to the north of Swaythling railway station revealed demolition layers and early modern features associated with the railway cottages pre-existing on the site. A ditch aligned east-west was observed in the south end of the site but no dating evidence was recovered from its fills. The development area to the east was heavily disturbed by the building foundations and deep cellars associated with the Masons Arms Public House, and no evidence of the east-west ditch was visable here. There was no evidence of a route pre-dating the present line of Wessex Lane. [Au] |
