Abstract: |
Four evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of the demolition of existing buildings and the erection of two warehouses with associated parking and landscaping. Although nothing was known from this precise site, there was the potential for prehistoric, Roman and later evidence, especially with the presence of two Roman villas nearby. Three significant archaeological features were recovered, two Roman and one prehistoric. A broad Roman water channel and gully were seen in three trenches. This channel possibly served as a tail race for a Roman water mill some way to the south. The third and largest feature was an area peat, which appears to have been a wide, shallow hollow or lagoon, containing a high proportion of artefacts. [Au(adp)] |
