Abstract: |
Contractors constructing a new organ loft and repositioning the font at St. Budock church uncovered numerous human bones from beneath current floor levels. Work was halted until an archaeological investigation of the pits already dug could be carried out, and then continued under the direction and advice of the archaeological field officer present. Archaeological recording at the west of the nave and north aisle identified two main archaeological components: graves and floors. The graves were closely spaced and dated to the 18th or 19th centuries. There were five floors, three predating the graves and possibly relating to building phases from the 13th to 16th centuries; one was that from which the graves were dug in the post-medieval period, and the fifth was the present surface.
