Abstract: |
Topographic and geophysical surveys were conducted over the area of the villa in order to locate and accurately plot the ground plan. A building comprising a range of rooms set around at least three sides of a large courtyard measuring approximately 80 by 90m. The western wing was likely to have formed the foundations for an early 20th century barn. The area previously investigated in 1909 was not as previously thought a small villa, but the south-western corner of a considerably larger structure, comparing favourably with the Roman palace at Fishbourne. The state of survival was unknown, though a series of anomalies in the southern and northern ranges may be interpreted as areas of solid floor or collapsed hypocaust. Nothing in the new survey compared with the foundations exposed in 1817 which appeared to have been conducted to the north of the 2005 survey. A possible terraced garden was recorded to the south of the palace and a 15m wide anomaly was recorded running through the centre of the eastern wing of the site. [Au(abr)] |
