Abstract: |
The assessment identified that no archaeological material had been found specifically from the site, although this was more likely to have been due to a lack of archaeological survey, than an absence of deposits. Early activity in the area was indicated by a high proportion of flint implements of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age date from a number of sites a short distance to the north. Evidence of later occupation was indicated by the presence of a Romano-British cemetery in the Beech Road area. Early cartographic evidence had revealed that the present high Street, including the area of the Museum, was formed and well developed by the late 18th century. This suggested that the plot occupied by the museum was within the extent of the medieval town plan. [Au(adp) |
