Abstract: |
The evaluation was carried out within the grounds of the church which stood on a site which was thought to have been used for Christian worship since before the Norman Conquest, and possessed the only accepted pre-Norman tower in Cumbria. During the evaluation, evidence of a flagged surface which lay well below present ground level was found, and the original masonry at the base of the south aisle and south transept was revealed and recorded, as was the entrance from the south transept into the south chancel. Burials were encountered which were removed to the depths specified in the brief, with all remains being collected for re-burial. [AIP] |
