Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken prior to the determination of a planning application for the construction of a 40-bedroom care facility. Excavations had been undertaken between 1970-1986 in proximity to the development site. The results from these excavations demonstrated the complexity and extent of surviving archaeological remains across the Downs, which dated from the Late Bronze Age through to the medieval period. In those areas occupied by the main building of the Hotel and those formerly occupied by demolished outbuildings, truncation of archaeological remains may have occurred. Across the remainder of the proposed development site, however, preservation of the buried archaeological resource was likely to have been good. [Au(adp)] |
