Abstract: |
As found in previous work on the site, the undisturbed clay layers below the fort contained significant quantities of prehistoric lithic material. The bulk of the flints were reasonably fresh and were probably largely in situ. The general characteristics of the assemblage suggested that much of it was of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. Large quantities of flints of that date occured on the downlands around Dover. One, a more abraded piece most probably the broken butt end of an earlier Mesolithic axe or pick with a typical triangular cross-section was also found. The growing quantity of prehistoric flint material recovered from Archcliffe Fort was clearly suggestive of occupation in the area. [Au(abr)] |
