Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a car-park identified that it lay immediately to the north of the site of middle Saxon palaces, and would have occupied a central position within the former late Saxon town. The area had later developed into an important medieval town. The site had been occupied by a variety of buildings between 1899 and 1956, the foundations of which would have damaged or destroyed any archaeological deposits, although the extent of the damage remained uncertain. Some of the buildings had possessed cellars, now infilled with hardcore. It was noted that construction of the Barclaycard Building would also have destroyed remains, although the upper archaeological horizon was likely to have survived within a series of disconnected squares defined by the ground beams. It was concluded that partial Saxon and medieval deposits could exist within the proposal site, and that a trial excavation would probably be necessary. [AIP] |
