Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the site of the Oracle building, a 17th century workhouse, and the 17th century 'Yield Hall', demolished in 1850 and 1935 respectively. At least two well-preserved medieval buildings, parts of Yield Hall and remains of the Oracle building were revealed. The latter were considered to be of national importance, due to the lack of available information relating to 17th century workhouses. Evidence of medieval and 17th century revetment of a man-made, probably 12th century, water channel, and two 17th century structures were noted. 13th-14th century land reclamation pre-dating a possible road surface was found. Infilled water channels were recorded which contained medieval artefacts, including a gilded lock case, a pair of scissors and a knife. The area of the Oracle site was deemed to be of regional importance, as little information had previously been available for medieval Reading. [AIP] |
