Abstract:
The archaeological evaluation revealed that building numbers 1 & 3 and 5-9 were timber-framed, consisting of two storeys and attics. The framing technique was characteristic of the first half of the 17th century, with the survival of some medieval techniques. Houses 1 & 3 had a common floor plan, with a similar symmetrical pattern to the floor plans of houses 5-9. Two hand-dug test pits revealed a flint cobbled surface, associated with the rear yard of Nos. 1 & 3 and several domestic waste deposits that had probably been used to level the ground surface. A large assemblage of clay pipes, ranging in date from the 17th to late 19th century. The earlier pipes were of a plainer design but those of the 19th century, displayed highly ornate moulded decoration. Many of the pipes bore the mark of Thomas Pascall who produced pipes at 17 Overy Street the next door property between 1832-510. [Au(abr)]
