Abstract:
A desk-based assessment identified that the tower, completed around 1393-4, contained five storeys; the four lower ones were almost identical, each with a central hall with a fireplace, flanked by two smaller rooms that were clearly lodgings for important members of the Earl's household or guests. The elegantly vaulted top-floor room was probably designed as a viewpoint for the household and guests, as it's openings seemed unsuitable for artillery. Documentary research charted the use of the Tower into the post-medieval period and the lodgings seemed to have continued in use until the early 18th cneutry. During the civil war, the tower served as a gun platform and quarters for prisoners and during the 17th century the castle monuments were housed there. However, the most distinctive use of the tower, from the late 17th century, was for 'illuminations', light and fireworks shows to celebrate important local and national events. [Au(abr)
