Abstract:
This desk-based assessment was commissioned in response to a request from the Northumberland County Council Conservation Team for further archaeological information. The site was earmarked in the Local Plan for residential development. This assessment indicated that the site had a long history of agricultural use. There was no evidence (in particular from aerial photographs) to indicate the presence of any archaeological remains representing occupation from the later prehistoric periods onwards. Finds of Mesolithic flints within the surrounding area had been recorded, though there were none known within the site, and none was found as a result of fieldwalking commissioned to inform this assessment. It was unlikely therefore that any such finds representative of Mesolithic activity were present within the site. The in situ preservation of any such finds was thought to be likely in any case to have been compromised by recent land use including intensive ploughing and the installation of drains. No further evaluation was considered necessary before determination of the planning application. A grade II Listed Building known as Moor House Farm was located to the west of the site, though it was not considered that it would be significantly affected by development. [Au(abr)]
