Abstract: |
Four evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of building work at a school. The trenches revealed two shallow, undated ditches, probably early field boundaries. A deeply buried subsoil layer, probably a colluvial deposit, in trench four yielded three worn pot sherds of late Iron Age and Roman date. A series of modern services for the working school was also located, together with some slight evidence for a previously demolished mid 20th century classroom (trench two). A proposed fifth trench was not excavated due to the density of live services in the area. Despite local stories about the existence of underground classrooms and air raid shelters on the site, nothing was found in the areas examined. However, parts of the air raid shelters (previously recorded) were subsequently located by the developers. [Au(abr)] |
