Abstract:		 Archaeological investigations along the route of the Viverdon Down bypass over the winter of 1995 comprised geophysical survey, open-area excavation and the excavation and removal of Westcott Cross, as well as monitoring an area targeted for landfill. A northern and a southern section of the bypass corridor were examined by excavation following two geophysical surveys. In the south ditches belonging to an episode of post-medieval enclosure were found. In the north an isolated hearth pit containing the broken head of a Neolithic axe was found. This discovery illuminated an otherwise patchy picture of the earlier prehistoric landscape. A probable medieval field boundary was also found in the north. The excavation and removal of the Westcott Cross located at the northern end of the road scheme revealed that the cross dating to c.12th and 13th centuries, had been originally short and stumpy and that it had been removed from its original location as it was not in situ.
