Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on the sie which lay in the centre of Minchinhampton Village. A previous desktop assessment had identified that the site lay within an area of archaeological potential close to the medieval core of the village. The remains of a Victorian National School were also present within the site. The evaluation showed evidence of quarrying activity on the southern boundary of the site, which was thought to date to the post-medieval period. Several phases of levelling over the disused quarries appeared to have taken place as the site was developed during the 19th and 20th centuries. The evaluation also showed that a significant proportion of structural remains associated with the National School, built in 1868, survived in the northern part of the site. No evidence of earlier medieval structures was found within the evaluation trenches. [Au(abr)] |
