Abstract: |
Alterations and new building work at 21/23 Highcross St (a Grade II listed early eighteenth centuy builiding) were observed. The excavation of foundation and service trenches revealed possible evidence for a Roman building, a property boundary wall of medieval or later date, and the surviving south wall of the Borough Gaol, constructed in 1792 immediately to the north of the early 18th century property and demolished in 1880. The survival of Roman remains at depths in excess of 2.8m indicated potential for preservation elsewhere in the vicinity. [Au(adp)]\n |
