Abstract:
The application area had extensive medieval ridge and furrow cultivation attested to by extensive earthworks and aerial photographs. The aim of the gradiometer survey was to locate any archaeological anomalies within the predefined transect sample strategy as agreed with by the client. The work formed part of a wider archaeological evaluation undertaken by Northern Archaeological Associates. The data contained a few anomalies of possible interest, primarily pit-type in form, with some faint linear trends. No clear pattern could be discerned and there was no suggestion of settlement or extensive anthropogenic activity in the results. Most of these anomalies could have equally represented more deeply buried ferrous material, or natural variations in the soil; however, given the wider archaeological context of the area, an archaeological interpretation could not be discounted entirely. There were clear indications of former ridge and furrow cultivation in the data. This interpretation was supported by the known archaeology of the site. [Au(abr)]
