Abstract: |
Excavations in the area of the former car park revealed pits and dumps of pre-conquest date and the remains of a probable tenement boundary that dated to the 11th century. The archaeological sequence in Trench 5 consisted of a pre-conquest timber walkway that ran on a parallel alignment to a large wattle boundary fence. These features were sealed by a series of pre-conquest dump layers and rubbish pits that contained Anglo-Scandinavian finds. One badly truncated Anglo-Scandinavian pit contained the skeleton of a mature female, together with the fragmentary disarticulated remains of three other individuals. A timber lined medieval cesspit truncated the earlier dump sequences. The excavation provided evidence of early Romano-British occupation of the site in the form of a large rubbish pit. Trench 8 revealed the remains of a late pre-Conquest timber building that contained a number of internal features. Outside the building a series of dump deposits accumulated over a relatively short period of time. Pottery from a series of associated destruction deposits suggested that the building had been destroyed by fire some time around the middle of the 11th century. [Au(abr)] |
