Abstract:
The desk-based archaeological assessment for proposed redevelopment showed that the site lay within the walls of Roman and medieval Leicester and partly inside the SAM of Leicester Castle. Late Iron Age - early Roman pits and finds, often associated with shrines or temple sites, had been made in the vicinity and the site corresponded with a section of one of the principal streets of the Roman town. Roman buildings had also been found nearby. The south-west corner of the site included any surviving parts of the bailey ditch of the original 11th-century castle. Evidence of medieval activity was also known in the area and occupation remains were likely in street frontage areas. The proposed development area, therefore, was recognised as having very significant archaeological potential. Archaeological field evaluation would be advisable on the site to better ascertain the archaeological potential and to aid in the design of any future development proposals and mitigation strategies.
