Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of one of several sites under consideration for the construction of a water treatment works identified that no archaeological remains had been recorded at the site. However, a walkover survey revealed that a ruined post-medieval barn lay within the proposal area. Prehistoric bronze fragments had been discovered immediately to the west of the site, whilst finds of Roman pottery and a Bronze Age hoard confirmed the archaeological potential of the general area. The Scheduled earthworks of a medieval village and evidence of a second deserted settlement had also been recorded, and an aerodrome used in the Second World War lay in the vicinity. It was concluded that the proposal site had potential for prehistoric and Roman remains, but that the presence and significance of potential features could not be evaluated without further fieldwork.
