Abstract: |
The development area was identified as being a potential site of very high archaeological potential. The Roman fort of Pons Aelius lay approximately 30 metres to the south of the site. The vicus attached to the fort was almost certainly within the development area. A Saxo-Norman cemetery was known to have existed within 50 metres of the site. From the construction of the Black Gate in the 13th century, the development area was at the centre of the growing medieval settlement of Newcastle. [AIP] |
