Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a residential development. Two machine excavated trial trenches were cut in the rear of the garden of the property. Trench 1 was located in the north-east corner of the garden and contained a single cut feature, probably a modern soakaway. Trench 2, located along the eastern edge of the property, contained considerable archaeological remains which included a ring-ditch, stake-holes, pits and ditches. Very limited sample excavation was possible, although pottery and other cultural material recovered from the ring-ditch and the surface of other features during the machine work and hand-cleaning suggested a prehistoric and Roman date, and probably represented a small settlement or at least occupation during the later Iron Age [Belgic] period and the earlier Roman period.
