Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological recording was undertaken at the Grinton lead smelt mill in Swaledale during a programme of consolidation and rebuilding work as well as a detailed survey and photographic record of the mill, surrounding earthworks and small reservoir. The furnance room revealed the base of a second sandstone keeper for the western ore hearth, a small sondage also confirmed a flag floor. Rubble clearance revealed a well preserved east tuyere hole and a second draught hole. It was established that the bellows room waterwheel was fed by a leat and raised launder running from the main reservoir and a range of structures running south from the smelt mill are tentatively interpreted as bingsteads.
