A note illustrating the quality and potential of a vertical photography survey of all 43 townships in the Midlands region where ridge and furrow is deemed worthy of preservation as part of the MPP. Braunston in Northamptonshire is the example used.

Notes five burnt mound sites recently revealed by gravel quarrying activity. One at Birstall (Leics), two at Castle Donington (Leics), and one at Willington (Derbys) are all thought to be Bronze Age. A second at Willington may be Late Neolithic.

Challenges recent interpretations of the presence of henbane in the palaeobotanical data set (particularly Balfarg/Balbirnie -- see 95/1092).

A manuscript scroll log of Crawford's first foray into aerial photography (in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), and the roller-board on which the scroll is mounted -- a cavalryman's mapping board of the type in use from the 1870s to the 1920s -- are placed in their respective historical contexts and an explanation for their seemingly improbable conjunction is offered.
