Abstract
Major Roman building discovered at Dover
121 - 122
Brief note on the recent discovery during construction work of a massive mortared wall five-feet high -- thought to be an internal wall of a substantial building. Swift rescue work by the Kent Unit ensured adequate recording.
An intriguing group of objects from sites in Kent
Deborah A Cooper
122 - 125
Notes discoveries of LIA-RB bronze cosmetic sets, particularly `mortars' found at Crayford and Springhead. Originally parts of `pestle and mortar' sets of small size, they are thought to have been used in the preparation of face or eye powders, are peculiar to Britain and mostly of the first--second-centuries AD although some are found in IA contexts.
A Roman road along the Darent valley?
Edmund Waddelove
126 - 131
Presents evidence for a road, resulting from fieldwork by the author and consultation with the OS 21/2in Pathfinder Series maps, both to the north and south of Lullingstone villa. Further investigation in advance of road/housing development is called for.
Warning: stolen finds from Roman springhead
Brian Philp
131 - 132
Outlines recent destructive treasure-hunting activity at a Roman site and cautions against association with, or purchase from, the culprits.
A possible Bronze Age grave at Walmer 1910
Keith Parfitt
133 - 135
Notes antiquarian reference to the discovery of two decorated pins in a stone pit at Walmer. It is thought this was a cist grave, possibly of BA date; however, the pins themselves are no longer available for examination. Despite debate as to their age, it is thought on the basis of available evidence that they are BA -- possibly Picardy pins.
The Churches Conservation Trust (formerly the Redundant Churches Fund): caring for 290 of England's `churches in retirement'
Roy Tricker
137 - 141
Outlines the role and structure of the organisation and provides brief details of a dozen churches in Kent under its care.
Flint axe from Chilham
Jo Alpin
Notes discovery of a polished Neolithic axe.
Memorial to Allen Grove
Brief tribute to the former curator of Maidstone museum who died in 1990, noting that the latest volume of Archaeologia Cantiana, 111, is dedicated to him (abstracts published in this volume of BAB).
