A field evaluation and watching brief led to the discovery of a ninth- to eighth-century BC unenclosed settlement site which was subsequently excavated. It is of particular significance due to the lack of similar LBA settlements on the coastal plain of Hampshire and West Sussex. `The pottery' is covered by Jane Timby (19--25), `The flint' by Steve Ford (27--9), `Saddle querns' by David F Williams (29--30), and `Carbonised plant remains' by John B Letts (30--1). Clay weights and fired clay objects are also discussed.

Describes the results of a fieldwalking survey carried out between 1979 and 1986 in part of the Avon valley north of Ringwood, Hampshire. The survey was largely carried out in a `non-site' mode (ie artefact density was analysed according to modern land-divisions); the methods used are described and their impact on the results examined. The Mesolithic and BA lithic material recovered is analysed in relation to the local ecology, and land-use patterns based on this analysis are suggested; specific consideration is given to the evidence of burnt mounds. Patterns of occupation and land use from the Iron Age to the medieval period are then documented and discussed.

Describes, quantifies, and discusses pottery from fourteen sites excavated between 1956 and 1983 and from stratified pre-Conquest deposits. Continuity is observed between Middle Saxon and post-Conquest pottery traditions, and a regional identity is established.

Studies three farm houses in the manor of Twyford and Marwell (Hensting Farm, Colden Farm, and one variously named `Uphill', `Low Hill' or `Park Farm'). Unusually, documentary records relating to these buildings also survive. Appendices comprise `Hensting Farm -- building account (ac./2,f.46)' (188), a `Transcript of the probate inventory for William Futcher of Hensting (HRO 1675 P/103)' (189), and `A transcript of the probate inventory of John Eyer of Uphill Farm' (190) .
