Appleton-le-Street: All Saints Church
Philip A Rahtz
Lorna Watts
K Saunders
24 - 31
Describes some new observations, principally of the pre-Norman phases of the church. It is argued that the nave is earlier than the two stages of the tower and incorporated a circular window in the west gable (and possibly, originally, a similar one in the east gable). The discovery of an Anglo-Scandinavian brooch in a small enclosure north of the church supports the use of the area during this period.
