Abstract
The archaeology of government
Bruce G Trigger
95 - 106
A general survey indicates the possibilities for combining demographic, cultural, societal, geographical and iconographic approaches in order to obtain a greater understanding of the political organisation of text-free ancient societies. Au(abr)
Further refinement of formulae for determining population from floor area
Samuel E Casselberry
117 - 122
Any formula which attempts to estimate the population of a dwelling from floor area must be restricted to homogeneous dwelling types. The population of a multi-family dwelling can be estimated as one-sixth of the floor area as measured in square metres. This is only a rough approximation since the important factor for determining population density is not the amount of space but the amount of sensory stimulation experienced by the inhabitants, and this cannot be assessed. The Covering Law model in archaeology: practical uses and formal interpretations
Patty J Watson
S A LeBlanc
Charles L Redman
125 - 132
The authors rebut Morgan's critique (see abstract 73/2033) of their book Explanation in Archeology on the grounds that: (1) they were not advocating that archaeologists adopt a formalist version of the covering-law model; (2) he cites technical difficulties which do not in fact arise in archaeologicai applications of the model; (3) he misunderstands the authors' position about the practical value of the model. Au(abr) C G Morgan's rejoinder (pp 133-7) speaks of errors and confusions in the statement of Watson et al and concludes that such a hotly debated doctrine should not be used prescriptively.
Regression analysis of some trade and marketing patterns
Ian Hodder
172 - 189
A number of artefact distributions are studied as measures of contact or interaction with a production, marketing or service centre. The fall-off in interaction with distance is examined with a regression model, whose parameters are found to vary interestingly. The use of the gravity model for predicting service areas around nodes of contact is also shown to be possible in archaeological contexts. See also abstract 75/3030. Au
Roman currency: new thoughts and problems
Richard Reece
299 - 306
In this survey a fresh method of dealing with coin finds is proposed in which each coin is regarded as a fraction of a pound of gold. This avoids the endless complications with which pursuit of the life cycles of individual denominations has so far littered the path of archaeological numismatics. Au(abr)
