Excavation by Charles McBurney and John Clegg during the early 1960s revealed a sequence with a Mousterian occupation, of which the principal finds were two bout coupé handaxes, stratified close to the base of a Middle Devensian hyaena-den accumulation. The human occupation should belong within the period 64-38 ka with comparative and stratigraphic evidence favouring a date within the earlier part of this range before 50 ka. The hyaena occupation probably extends from at least 40 ka (if not 60 ka) until c. 24 ka. There is a short appendix listing post-medieval finds (79).

A paper providing an interpretative framework for discussion of regional differences in the distribution and design of Neo monuments.

Analysis of stored soil samples and animal bones produced evidence for ceremonial activity and feasting prior to the construction of the barrow mound. This encourages discussion on both the role of this barrow and the primary function, other than interment, of similar monuments, especially from the evidence of environmental data. Study of both land mollusca and faunal remains enabled a greater explanation of the cultural history of the monument and aided the site phasing. Describes fieldwork at Glyn-y-Fran (Llanfyrnach) and near Glandy Cross, where clear evidence for stone axe-head manufacture had been found. Trial trenching found no contemporaneous features. Opportunistic small-scale exploitation of locally abundant erratics is envisaged during the Neolithic.
