Abstract
Subsistence and symbol: the interpretation of bird remains in archaeology
Dale Serjeantson
255 - 259
Past human exploitation of birds on the Isle of Man
Clemency Thorne Fisher

Compares evidence from historical, ethnographic, and archaeological sources.
Interpreting the immature chicken bones from the Romano-British ritual complex on West Hill, Uley

The bioerosion of bird bones
Paul G Davis
388 - 401
Presents a synthesis of the evidence for modern archaeological and palaeontological bioerosion of vertebrate tissue. It describes the first evidence for the bioerosion of modern archaeological and fossil bird bones. A new form of bone bioerosion, known as Hacket tunnels is defined. Bone from marine and lacustrine environments can appear to be macroscopically well preserved whilst having microscopic fabric destruction.
Domestic fowl on Romano-British sites: inter-site comparisons of abundance
Mark J M Maltby
402 - 414
Compares the abundance of domestic fowl bones with those of sheep/goat and pig from published and un-published reports on RB animal bone assemblages. The samples are taken from sixty-eight urban, military, nucleated, villa, and un-Romanized rural settlements. Variations in abundance within and between these settlement types are noted.
Comparing bird bones from Saxon sites: problems of interpretation
Jennie Coy
415 - 421
A paper discussing some of the problems of analysing the relative importance of birds and of the ratio of fowls and geese. Detailed comparison of the results from sites in Southampton suggest that the first questions the faunal analyst should ask concern methods of recovery and quantification.
Raptors in towns: towards an ecological model
S Mulkeen
Terry P O'Connor
440 - 449
Survey of the occurrence of bones of raptorial birds in Rom and medieval nucleated settlements in north western Europe. Includes British data.
