Abstract:
A report on work near Presteigne in Powys which has produced two sites of national or even international importance: a Neolithic pit complex at Upper Ninepence, and a Neolithic palisaded enclosure at Hindwell II. Other excavations were carried out on: A barrow at Hindwell Ash and possible barrow at Upper Ninepence which both appear to be BA but have later hearths cut into them; enclosures from Knapp Farm, Upper Ninepence and Hindwell which have IA affinities; Walton Green cursus which has been dated mainly by comparison with other sites situated within a ritual landscape to the Neolithic period; and an area scattered with flint at Rough Close Farm. Apart from Mesolithic flints, activity in the area focuses on the Neolithic and BA periods. Finds reports comprise: a discussion on lithics discovered during the survey; `The worked flint from the Dunn Collection and the excavations' by Philippa Bradley (49--79); `The other stone artefacts from Upper Ninepence (geological identifications by D Jenkins)' (80--1); Three main groups of pottery from Hindwell Ash and Upper Ninepence, Peterborough Ware, Grooved Ware and Early Bronze Age and the Hindwell Ash glass bead; and `The slag from Hindwell I' by M Walters (99). Scientific analysis of the artefacts covers: `Microwear analysis of the flint artefacts from Upper Ninepence' Randolph E Donahue (100-12); `The organic residue analysis of the Neolithic pottery' by Stephanie N Dudd & Richard P Evershed (112--20); `The section analysis of the pottery from Upper Ninepence' by D Jenkins & J Williams (120--5); and `Analysis of a glass bead from Hindwell Ash and its archaeological interpretation' by J Henderson (125--6). The palaeoenvironmental section reports on: `Phosphate and magnetic susceptibility studies of buried soils and such sediments from the Upper Ninepence excavations' (127--31) and `Report on soil thin sections from Upper Ninepence' (131--41) both by John Crowther; `Hindwell Ash charcoals' by G Morgan (141 & 142); `The charred plant remains from Walton' by Astrid E Caseldine & Catherine J Barrow (141 & 142--50); `Walton complex charcoal identifications' by Su Johnson (150--3); and `Palynological investigations in the Walton Basin' by Astrid E Caseldine (153).
