Abstract:
Reports excavations at Torberry Hillfort (Sussex) and two small scatters of pits at Chalton (Hampshire). The first defensive phase at Torberry (possibly preceded by occupation with early furrowed bowls) was a cross-rampart (?of Hollingbury type) and ditch. Later the hill was completely enclosed (?5th-4th centuries), with successive modifications thereafter until slighting and abandonment c 100 BC. Pottery from this site and the two Chalton ?farmstead pit sites is illustrated, discussed and tentatively dated from 6th century BC to the Roman conquest.
