An assemblage of lithics was recovered from deposits that appear to represent a scooped occupation. Analysis of the assemblage and a radiocarbon date range of 6355--6012 cal BC indicate that it belongs to the Mesolithic. This is the first Mesolithic material recovered by excavation in the Girvan area and the site provides additional evidence for a class of Mesolithic sites consisting of shallow scoops surrounded by turf or earthen banks. Although occupied as a dwelling for a relatively short time, probably between the 1880s and 1920s, the blackhouse at no. 39, Arnol, Isle of Lewis, was modified many times. The original structure seems to have been constructed to a typical blackhouse pattern with adjoining barn, byre/dwelling and entrance. Both dwelling and entrance have been lengthened. The extension to the entrance proved unstable, collapsed and was blocked. The eastern end of the dwelling was extended in the early-twentieth century and a window inserted. Excavation of the interior revealed different floor surfaces and features. Sections through the floors and walls provided detailed information about construction methods of blackhouses.

Sufficient evidence survived to confirm the presence of a medieval cemetery in the grounds of Colonsay House, Kiloran, Isle of Colonsay, when human remains were unearthed in the gardens.
