Abstract
Pick-dressing on the Neolithic monuments of Orkney
Tim Phillips
Richard Bradley
103 - 110
Reports results of a survey of the treatment of the stone surfaces at a selection of monuments. In discussing the observations, comparisons are made with treatment of monuments in the Boyne Valley, Ireland; these suggest that `pick-dressed' areas may have served as keying to hold `plaster', which may have been painted.
More thoughts on why the Romans failed to conquer Scotland
David J Woolliscroft
111 - 122
Although the Flavian withdrawal from Scotland was largely caused by the withdrawal of Legio II Adiutrix and other units, different factors must have seriously exacerbated the effects of these force reductions, making withdrawal more inevitable and later re-occupation less vital. In particular, the relatively low state of native political development must have made the area more difficult to govern and less of a threat if relinquished.
The medieval parish churches of the Isle of Bute: St Blane's, Kingarth, and St Mary's Rothesay
Reginald Pringle
123 - 154
Reviews the available evidence for both monuments, which were abandoned after the Reformation, and sets them in their historical context. St Blane's occupies the site of an early monastery, probably founded in the later sixth century; the present church was built in the early-thirteenth, when it served the whole island. A second parish was formed by the early-fourteenth century, with St Mary's as its church.
Excavation of a medieval moated site in Elderslie, Renfrewshire
Derek Alexander
155 - 177
Describes archaeological evaluation of a large rectilinear moated enclosure at the reputed birthplace of Sir William Wallace. Excavation across the moat revealed it to be a wide, flat-bottomed, ditch, its inner edge faced by a battered and mortared rubble wall. Artefacts and radiocarbon date suggest this enclosure was medieval, but most material recovered from the interior of the site related to post-medieval use. Includes:
Pottery report
George R Haggarty
170 - 172
Excavation of sub-peat agricultural features on Machrie Moor, Arran
Kevin J Taylor
Tara Hunter
179 - 186
Excavations near two upstanding hut circles overlooking Machrie Moor revealed traces of narrow or `cord' rig associated with a small cairn, with earlier ard marks sealed beneath. A radiocarbon date from the overlying peat spanned the fifth to seventh centuries AD.
A most aesthetically pleasing impression: the new Museum of Scotland
Barbara E Crawford
187 - 190
Critical appreciation of Scotland's national museum.
