Excavations on a site in an area of known BA, IA and RB activity (see89/1182) revealed evidence of Mesolithic/Neolithic flint-knapping, LBA and EIA features and successive early Roman boundary ditches. An Early Saxon sunken-floored building and other features, on the edge of the scarp overlooking the Thames floodplain; a mixed assemblage of charred plant remains from the fill of the sunken floor provided possible evidence of a mixture of flooring material and/or thatch which had been partly burnt before disposal (`Charred plant macrofossils and other remains', V Fryer & P Murphy, 54--56; `Palynological evidence', P E J Wiltshire, 56--57). An interdisciplinary study that brings out the complexity of peasant development in thirteenth-century Essex, drawing on both archaeological results (landscape evidence) and documentary sources.

Several relatively closely-dated schemes of paintings: on the walls of the apse an extensive thirteenth-century Passion cycle, fragments of other thirteenth-century paintings (including a scene of Adam and Eve) and fourteenth-century paintings (extremely early examples of their type) on the south and north walls of the church.

Salvage recording, some 2km south of the colonia and about the same distance east of the Gosbecks region, revealed evidence for pre-conquest settlement and a possible Mid Roman villa.

Timber-built coastal fish-weirs; the eleven radiocarbon dates from three sites suggesting that these structures were mainly a Saxon phenomenon in Essex.

Posthumous paper, setting out some evidence for a change in the joints at the corners of the top plates of church spires between c. AD1200 and 1450.

An early Medieval ditch system (thirteenth century and earlier); possibly the field and trackway boundaries of an (unlocated) settlement.
