SJ 899429. Describes the kiln furniture used to protect and support the porcelain vessels and figures, 1751-60. (See 79/6512 for Part I).

NS 790940. Excavation and survey on the Spur Battery and adjacent areas of the castle confirmed the plans of the 16th century 'French spur'. Further evidence of the 16th century defences was uncovered adjacent to the Queen Anne Battery. Pottery, glass, pipes. Au(adp)

Archaeological work in connection with restoration traced the remains of three main periods of construction. The castle dates to 1539/40, was altered into a 'glorified Martello Tower' in the Napoleonic Wars, and received further alterations in 1859. Au(abr)

The blast furnace had two phases: a small square structure 5.5m across was followed by a larger one poorly built in near-rubble masonry. The wooden wheelpit, tail race, and a waterwheel fragment were well preserved. An ancillary hearth was perhaps for drying gun-moulds, and a gun-casting pit had been robbed out. Au(abr)

Analysis of a number of exceptionally well-documented examples of depopulated villages shows that desertion arose from converting open field townships into series of severalty farmholds. The fate of a settlement depended largely upon how such policies were applied and on the extant tenurial structure. Au(abr)

TL 567181. Often cited (notably by RCHM Eng) as an early example of the lobby entrance house (inscribed 1560), the central block is now seen to be no older than 1575 although the cross-wings are substantially older. The date of insertion of the chimney stack which produced the lobby-entrance plan is unknown.
