Abstract
Rawcliffe the 5th
Kurt Hunter-Mann
2 - 6
Further work at Rawcliffe investigated possible medieval deposits. Revelations included a fishpond, field drainage ditch, and a moated site indicating what is thought to have been a shortlived manor house. Also uncovered was what appeared to be the remains of a medieval platform house. Earlier features in the guise of Iron Age pot and Iron Age/Romano-British linear field boundaries were also seen.
Roman road works -- service but no smile
Patrick Ottoway
7 - 14
Watching briefs noted the course of the Roman road at Micklegate. The brief was undertaken during sewer trench work and the need for archaeological work in advance of major service trenching is noted.
The reasons for resin -- amber working at Coppergate
Ailsa J Mainman
Ian Panter
21 - 24
Reports the study of evidence for amber working at the site. It is hoped that analysis will reveal something of the use of variations in colour and the possible significance of such practice, the provenance, and the location of the amber workshops at Coppergate.
Jewbury update
Jane Lilley
25 - 33
A précis of the cemetery at Jewbury notes several anomalies between contemporary Jewish burial practice and that evidenced in the cemetery. Cautions against overly simplistic interpretations based on contemporary evidence.
Music in the Bedern
Menya Wolfe
34 - 40
Reports the discovery of thirteen harp tuning pegs of bone in York, eleven from the site in question and two from Aldwark. Includes discussion of medieval and Renaissance music especially stringed instruments, and the purpose and nature of tuning pegs, along with the possible form of the harps from which these examples came.
