Describes a number of stone portraits found on the walls of the de Clare family home and attempts to establish their identities. Gives a brief history of the family from the time of Richard FitzGilbert who built the original motte and bailey structure to the thirteenth century when the castle was rebuilt.

Records work which uncovered a metalled road built over an earlier track and considers its importance as part of a main line of communication between the mainland and the port at Richborough. Discusses a find from the pre-Viking trading centre at Sandtun near West Hythe which has been in the British Museum since 1950 and speculates whether Anglo Saxons actually practised whaling or used bones from stranded individuals for the production of ivory objects in general.

Comments on society mainly based on population, occupation and economic statistics.

After a brief paragraph which discusses various activities of short duration, there are separate sections concerned with larger projects. D R J Perkins writes on: `Archaeological excavation and evaluation' (355--7) which discusses work at Thanet Reach Business Park, Broadstairs and Oaklands Nursery site, Ramsgate; and `Discoveries: metal detector and chance finds' (360--71) where he discusses finds from Kent International Business Park site, and the Cleve Court and Hoaden bronze hoards. `Ongoing research: the 'mattrosses' swords from HMS Stirling Castle' is by G H Slade (357--60).

Reports on a preliminary evaluation and a watching brief carried out in the course of construction at a site which has produced faunal assemblages from a number of periods as well as worked flint and pottery.

Records work undertaken in advance of development in an area containing medieval fields. A small amount of medieval pottery was unearthed but possibly more significant was the discovery of part of a shingle spit which enclosed the port at Hythe in the past.
