Abstract
In defence of the 'Natural Attitude': charting a return from the madness of interpretati...
David S Webster
A critique of post-processual thinking, interpretation and hermeneutics, from the perspective of the theory of `natural attitude'. Argues that post-processual archaeology is actually contained within the horizon of processualism while only feigning to be a more critical approach to the past and that it has an exaggerated and ill examined sense of the worth and utility of non-archaeologically indigenous theorising. There is a response from Julian Thomas, with a further comment from the author.

Churches as pre-historic ritual monuments: a review and phenomenological perspective from Som...

Power of Place: critique and response
Chris G Cumberpatch
A review of English Heritage's text Power of Place: The future of the Historic Environment, wherein the report is said to have several progressive aspects but some omissions. The omissions are thought to be that the range of threats to (and the diversity and wealth of) the Historic Environment is inadequately represented and also that the urban built environment is emphasised at the expense of other environments.
The archaeology of the clay pipe and the study of smoking
C. Cessford
Engages with the study of clay pipes by concentrating upon their functional role. Suggests that archaeologists should recognise that clay pipes form only one element of a larger `tobacco consumption package', while they also represent only one of a number of alternative modes of tobacco consumption.

Yannis Hamilakis
Mark Pluciennik
Sarah C Tarlow
Explores the results of a workshop on archaeologies of embodiment (June 1998) which was held in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings, other images and sculptures by artists who also deal in various ways with the human body were presented. Includes a discussion on the implications and possibilities of developing a closer relationship between art and archaeology.
Some observations on the concept of 'embedded' and 'disembedded' economies in archaeological discourse.
Chris G Cumberpatch
A discussion of the precise meanings and implications of the archaeological terms `embedded' economies and `disembedded' economies. The history of the terms is briefly explored and current attitudes to them within economic sociology are examined with reference to their usage in archaeology. Additionally, the dangers of confusing metaphor for explanation are outlined with reference to the uses of the notions of embeddedness and disembeddedness within archaeology.
